Humanitarian aid organisation Gift of the Givers says its teams are continuing to provide emergency relief to displaced foreign nationals across the Western Cape.
Thousands of foreign nationals from several African countries are seeking voluntary repatriation following the expiry of a deadline issued by the anti-illegal immigration movement, March and March.
Speaking to VOC News, Gift of the Givers Project Lead Ali Sablay said relief teams remain on the ground outside the Epping Refugee Centre, where many displaced people continue to seek assistance.
“In response to the growing number of women and children sleeping in the harsh cold outside the facility, three tents have been procured to provide immediate shelter and protection. Four buses are scheduled to depart this afternoon, with priority given to women and children on the first departures,” Sablay said.
He added that the organisation is also assisting 75 Zimbabwean nationals who were left stranded along the N1 after their bus broke down during the early hours of Wednesday morning.
“In addition, humanitarian support is being extended to displaced foreign nationals in Robertson and Sedgefield as part of our ongoing relief efforts,” he said.
Gift of the Givers has also established a dedicated Refugee Relief Collection Point and is appealing to the public to donate essential relief items for displaced families.
The collection point is located on Parking Level P1 at Cavendish Square and will accept donations daily from 10:00 to 19:00.
The organisation said donations of essential relief items will help provide much-needed support to vulnerable individuals and families affected by the humanitarian crisis.
