Following Banyana Banyana’s 1–0 friendly victory over Algeria in Durban, coach Desiree Ellis has shared insights into the team’s performance as preparations continue for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco this July.
Ellis highlighted improvements in the team’s attacking play, particularly in creating opportunities in the final third, but acknowledged that there is still work to be done.
“Let’s look at the performance. We worked a lot on our final-third entries and had a large number of entries. Maybe we could get more numbers in the box, the runs of the striker are something we still need to work on,” she said.
She added that while the team created chances, execution remains an area for improvement. Ellis also noted that Algeria posed some threats, which will be reviewed through match analysis.
“Of course, they had one or two chances, and we’ll look at the footage to see what we did wrong and what we can do right,” she explained.
Ellis further pointed to factors such as match fitness and recent playing schedules, saying the team may need to “up the tempo” going forward.
With WAFCON approaching, the coach said the focus remains on refining combinations and building momentum ahead of the continental showpiece.
