The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) continues to face pressure to place learners for the 2026 school year, as late applications—particularly for entry grades—continue to enter the system. While the majority of learners have been accommodated, thousands are still awaiting placement.
The department has attributed the delays to applications submitted well after official deadlines, many of which were received during the school holiday period when schools were closed. This has disrupted planning for learner placement, staffing, and resource allocation.
“Late applications disrupt the placement process and place additional strain on the system during a period when schools are not fully operational,” said WCED spokesperson Bronagh Hammond.
The WCED said it is intensifying engagement with principals and school management teams as educators return to schools. This process aims to identify additional spaces as enrolment lists are finalised and learner movement within the system creates capacity.
“Further placement opportunities are expected as schools complete their promotion and enrolment processes,” Hammond added.
The department will also conduct its annual ten-day snap survey once schools have reopened. The survey will provide updated learner numbers and help identify where additional resources and placement opportunities may be required.
Parents who have not yet applied are urged to do so immediately at their nearest education district office, while those still awaiting placement are asked to remain patient as the process continues.
