SA Ambassador to France Nathi Mthethwa has died

Condolences have been extended to the Mthethwa family following the tragic death of the South African Ambassador to France and former cabinet minister, Nathi Mthethwa. He reportedly died after falling or jumping from the 22nd floor of the Hyatt Hotel in Paris.

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation confirmed his death. In a statement, International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola on Tuesday said the French authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the 58-year-old’s death.

This incident occurred just days after he was named at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry as one of the political figures accused of interfering in police operations.

Andrew Ihsaan Gasnola, a columnist and analyst for the Daily Maverick, spoke to VOC News, stating the passing of Mthethwa is suspicious, given the ongoing Madlanga commission.

“Considering the context of the Madlanga Commission and the testimonies related to Nathi Mthethwa during his time as minister, his actions represented the worst kind of political interference. He was one of the major protectors, if not enablers, of former President Jacob Zuma during the state capture years,” stated the columnist.

Gasnola further noted, “There will likely be numerous discussions about the implications of all this and how it all connects.”
