Suspended South African Police Service (SAPS) Crime Intelligence boss Lt-Gen Dumisani Khumalo has alleged that attempts to disband the political killings task team were driven by an organised crime cartel with influence inside the Police Ministry.
Khumalo appeared on Monday as the fifth witness before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria, which is investigating claims that South Africa’s criminal justice system has been infiltrated and captured by criminal networks.
His testimony follows evidence linking his July arrest to alleged efforts to weaken the state’s anti-corruption work.
Khumalo said the task team, established to ensure accountability for political killings in KwaZulu-Natal, has faced retaliation for pursuing its mandate.
“Included in my affidavit is all the evidence that I’ll be able to share in the public hearing, but alongside this evidence set out in the statement, there is also considerably more evidence that cannot be shared in the public space,” he told the commission.
The commission is expected to continue hearing testimony this week from witnesses detailing how organised crime and political violence intersect with corruption in law enforcement.
