The University of the Witwatersrand on Thursday called in the police to investigate an arson attack on a bus owned by the institution.

The bus was burnt out on Wednesday night outside one of the university’s student residences in Parktown, Johannesburg.

Wits spokesperson spokesperson Shirona Patel confirmed that the bus which was set alight belonged to the university.

“We do not yet know the reasons for this but if students are involved in the act, they will be suspended immediately and disciplinary proceedings will be instituted,” said Patel.

Patel said a criminal case has been opened at the Parkview police station.

“The bus was covered by insurance but we do not yet know the cost of damages,” said Patel

Parkview police were unavailable to comment on the investigation.
