An anonymous witness, an undercover detective officer known as Witness E, took the stand at the Madlanga Commission yesterday, stating that the murder of ANC Youth League Secretary-General Sindiso Magaqa was preventable.
Witness E explained that he was informed directly by the shooters prior to the murder and that his superiors did not respond adequately when alerted. He admitted that had they acted, the ANC member would still be alive.
Speaking to VOC News, senior lecturer in police studies Professor Mpho Matlala said he questioned the authenticity of Witness E’s testimony, given that a recording he provided may have been tampered with. However, Matlala added that the extent of what has been revealed paints a damning picture of the South African Police Service.
“From what he has heard so far, the South African Police Service is systemically and structurally flawed. The culture there includes greedy criminal generals who want to live beyond their means, but overall, we have a South African Police Service that is selling the soul of South Africa to the criminal underworld,” said Matlala.
