W Cape universities to remain shut on Tuesday

Most of the main universities in the Western Cape will remain closed today due to ongoing students’ protests linked to the fees must fall campaign.

Students gathered for a mass meeting at the University of the Western Cape on Monday.

Management has decided to keep the institution closed until it reached an agreement with students.

The media was barred from attending the meeting.

University of the Western Cape (UWC) management says conditions on campus are currently not conducive to learning.

The Cape Peninsula University of Technology has moved large parts of its operations to the Wingfield Military Base in Goodwood.

Violent clashes between police and students last week resulted in the vandalism of buildings at both the Bellville and Cape Town campuses.

The University of Cape Town has meanwhile, retracted a statement that the institution and several others are under the command of the Public Order Police.

Classes are continuing normally at Stellenbosch University despite the protests.
