UWC suspends face-to-face classes for 2016

The University of the Western Cape (UWC) has decided to suspend all face-to-face classes for the rest of the academic year, in the light of on-going campus violence.

Violent protests erupted on Wednesday after management did not attend a mass meeting called by the students.

Extensive damage was caused to university property.

More than 20 students have been arrested.

UWC spokesperson Luthando Tyhalibonga says arrangements for examination preparations have been made.

He says they also have plans in place for students to write their exams.

“Students have been given options to write exams in November this year, or alternative to write in January 2017. Management has invited the SRC and other student structures, unfortunately it’s not a positive response for a meaningful engagement. The situation remains volatile.”

Tyhalibonga says alternative methods will be used to prepare students for examinations.
