Taxi drivers irate as vehicles are impounded in George

LOCAL

Law enforcement agencies have begun impounding several taxis that are operating illegally in George in the Southern Cape.
This is in line with a court interdict obtained by the George municipality, that stipulates that any taxi driver without a valid operating licence, will be subject to immediate arrest and their vehicle will be impounded. Taxi association, CODETA, has been operating without valid permits in the town since 2019, inspite of being warned of the consequences.
Taxi owner, Ntandazo Ndevu, says they were taken surprise by the action.
“We don’t have a way forward. We’re just standing here watching our taxi’s being impounded. They say they have a court order that we know applies at the taxi rank, not here. We have copies of that order. We are still lost in that way.”
