Students in Stellenbosch say they are living in fear, after another rape was reported on campus in less than a month. Last week the university was assisted by students in making the arrest of the suspect. The suspect will be appearing in court on Monday.
The 20 year old student had allegedly been raped by a 32 year old man. The incident happened on Saturday morning in a car in the parking area between the Heemstede and Metanoia residences.
Police confirmed that the suspect was not a student of the institution.
“We can confirm that the rape of a 20 year of female student of The University of Stellenbosch was reported to police,” says Captain FC Van Wyk.
The student is receiving medical treatment.
The patient received support and medical care by police, 24 crisis service, SRC, university management, student residence and leadership.
Stellenbosch university spokesperson Martin Viljoen said the community is appalled by the recent spate of rape cases. He urged the community to assist in clamping down on suspicious activity.
“Rape is a despicable crime. We are shocked. If anyone sees anything suspicious they should report it as soon as possible,” says Viljoen.
He added that the university prioritizes in putting the safety of its students and staff first.
“We will ensure that we provide a safe environment to our students and staff,” says Viljoen.
