According to political analyst Professor André Duvenhage of Northwest University, the Western Cape (WC) is seeing a surge in population because it offers more opportunities, and despite its slow pace, service delivery is being addressed, while other provinces are not witnessing significant change from those in authority.
Speaking on VOC Breakfast on Thursday morning, Duvenhage said although there is a high poverty level in the WC, the situation is more dire elsewhere.
“We need to understand that more than 50% of the population is living in poverty, but when compared to other provinces, the WC is doing well. We see change happening in the province, and to those living in the WC, it might seem as if it is long before change is seen, but the reality is that change can be seen,” he stressed.
When asked what he expects to hear from the State of the Province Address taking place on Thursday, Duvenhage said it would be a case of business as usual in most aspects.
“From a financial aspect, there is a lot that needs to be addressed, and I am not sure how this will be done if the Minister of Finance has not delivered his budget speech yet, but what I do know is that they will somehow have to address the issues of safety and security in the province, which is at an all-time high,” he added.
