An Islamic State whistleblower leaked 22 000 jihadi recruits’ identities this week.

According to news reports, the whistleblower became disillusioned with the group’s direction. The documents include names, addresses, family contacts and other personal information.

There are reportedly no South African names contained in the document despite rumours last year that Abu Hurayra had become the first South African jihadi fighter in Syria.

British foreign affairs journalist Jack Moore writes “Analyst says that this latest release shows that the militant group is seeking to emulate the structures of state governance”
