Meyiwa murder: Hawks mum on imminent arrest reports

The Hawks on Sunday refused to confirm reports that an arrest in connection with the murder of ex-Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa was imminent.

Hawks spokesperson Major Robert Netshiunda told News24 he “doesn’t know where this is coming from”.

He said the unit would not be commenting on the progress of the case and that new information would be released if and when necessary.

This comes after The Sunday Independent reported that police were “about to arrest” a person who was in the house when the soccer star was killed on October 26 2014.

Quoting a policeman close to the investigation, the newspaper reported that the suspect had been identified after the reconstruction of the crime scene two weeks ago and the studying of initial statements from witnesses present that night.

“The discrepancies in this particular statement by one of the eyewitnesses in the house have convinced us that no armed robbery took place that day,” the officer told the newspaper.

“I can unfortunately not give more information, but the suspect is lucky not to have spent the Easter weekend in police cells. But we will pounce any time from today [Sunday].”

Meyiwa was at his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s home in Vosloorus on October 26 2014 when a man entered and shot him, apparently during a scuffle.

Zanukuhle Mbatha, initially arrested for the murder, was released from custody in November due to a lack of evidence.

IOL reported Reports suggest that those present when he was shot included Khumalo, her two children, her mother, Ntombi, her sister, Zandi, two of Meyiwa’s friends and her sister’s boyfriend, Longwe Twala.
