Two armed robbers escaped with an empty cash box and a security guard’s gun when they hit Kenilworth Centre on Monday morning.

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said two guards arrived at the shopping centre at 11:00 to collect cash from one of the stores.

“It is alleged that as one of the security officers proceeded towards the centre entrance on the first level to collect the money, he was accosted by two unidentified, armed men who assaulted him and took his firearm,” he said.

“At gunpoint the suspects… removed the money box that he was holding.”

They then fled the scene.

It is understood the duo opened the box in one of the parking lots at the shopping centre, only to find it empty.

“They then abandoned the box and fled from the centre in a white Ford Bantam bakkie. No shots were fired and no arrests [have been made] at this stage.”

A case of armed robbery is under investigation, Van Wyk said. News24
