On Friday, Israel officially recognised the self-declared Republic of Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state, marking the first country to do so—a move that may alter regional dynamics and challenge Somalia’s enduring resistance to secession.
International relations analyst Dr Oscar Vanheerden told VOC News that the move by Israel could have significant implications on the region, while describing the move by Israel as “disgusting” noting that analysts are saying that the act is rather “opportunistic”.

The Government of Somaliland’s stance
The Government of Somaliland released a statement saying that it views the development as a “constructive contribution to peace, stability, and cooperation in the Horn of Africa and the wider Middle East.”
“The Republic of Somaliland hereby expresses its firm intention to accede to the Abraham Accords and reaffirms its commitment to building constructive partnerships, promoting mutual prosperity, and contributing meaningfully to peace and stability across the Middle East and Africa,” stated the Government of Somaliland.
However, analysts have argued that aligning with Israel, given the widespread reports of its ongoing military actions against Palestinian civilians—including women and children—could draw criticism and raise ethical concerns for Somaliland.
The MJC’s stance
Furthermore, the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) has condemned the move, deeming it as “An unlawful interference in the internal affairs of the Federal Republic of Somalia and a contravention of established norms of international law.”
