Heavy monsoon rains killed 40 people across Pakistan as flash flood inundated villages, prompting authorities to send troops to evacuate residents and assist in the emergency, officials said Friday.

The country’s meteorological service warned of more flash flooding over the weekend.

In the eastern city of Lahore, 13 people died when roofs collapsed there on Thursday, said Ahmad Kamal, a spokesman for the National Disaster Management Authority.

The rains triggered landslides that killed six civilians and three soldiers in the Pakistani-administered Kashmir, also on Thursday.

The military said it dispatched troops on Thursday night to evacuate people from flood-affected areas.

Pakistani TV stations broadcast footage showing flooded streets and inundated villages. Kamal said they were expecting exceptionally high floods over the weekend.

Heavy rains also lashed the capital, Islamabad, where thousands of opposition supporters have camped outside the parliament for weeks, demanding Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif resign over alleged voting fraud.

The protesters used makeshift tents made from plastic sheets to shelter themselves from the rains.

Pakistan regularly suffers from flooding during the monsoon season. In 2010, flash floods killed 1,700 people in Pakistan. SAPA
