At the G20 Energy Transition Working Group (ETWG) meeting in Sun City, North West, Electricity and Energy Minister Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa called for urgent action to scale up climate finance and end energy poverty. He emphasised the need to move from pledges to coordinated, inclusive investments in infrastructure, particularly in transmission, distribution, and flexible energy generation.
Ramokgopa also highlighted the importance of supporting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and early-stage projects. “Finance must become a tool of inclusion, not a barrier to participation. The credibility of the global transition rests on whether finance reaches where it is needed most, at the scale required and with the speed demanded by development and climate imperatives,” he said.
The ETWG, led by the Ministry of Electricity and Energy, is hosting its third technical meeting from 30 July to 1 August 2025. As part of the G20 framework, the working group facilitates global cooperation on sustainable energy transitions, encouraging knowledge-sharing and innovation among member countries.
This session builds on earlier meetings held virtually in February and in person in Cape Town in April. It also serves as a precursor to the upcoming ministerial meeting in October and the G20 Leaders’ Summit in November 2025.
