A father and his five-year-old son are lucky to be alive after escaping a fiery death.

The two were almost burned to death in their car after it caught alight and burst into flames.

Leon Ronnie, 45, said his BMW may be gone, but he is grateful their lives have been spared.

The car burnt out in Riebeeck Street, Kraaifontein on Tuesday evening just after 7pm.

The builder said he had no idea why his vehicle caught alight, but believed there may be supernatural causes.

“I believe lady luck has deserted me because people are jealous of me.

“I can see the envy of others, like tonight when my BMW burst out in flames all of a sudden,” Ronnie said.

“My five-year-old son and I were driving over Main Road in Kraaifontein when we suddenly saw flames coming from the bonnet.

“I had to think fast, I stopped the car and jumped out and took my son to safety. Then I went back to get my tools.

“By the time the firemen arrived the car was gutted.”

Ronnie said he built the car from scratch.

“I suspect that petrol may have gotten onto the engine and when it heated up, the petrol took flame, but I can’t say for sure.

“I’m just grateful our lives have been spared.

“I can always get another car… even if it’s just to prove to people that they won’t keep me down.”
