Education advocate warns against deceptive registration fee requests

Parents and guardians have been warned to be on the lookout for deceptive registration fee requests.

The public is advised to exercise caution and educate themselves about the registration fee policy for students funded by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). This as higher education institutions prepare to start the 2025 academic year this month.

According to education activist Hendrick Makaneta, the program pays for all the registration costs for qualified students from working-class and impoverished families.

“There has been increasing reports of students misleading parents of students misleading their parents into borrowing money to cover the cost of registration fees at higher places of education, money that NSFAS has already paid directly to these institutions. Parents are encouraged to verify their child’s NSFAS funding status before making any payments,” he added.
