Dullah Omar’s nephew fatally shot in apparent failed hijacking

Shaheed Omar, the nephew of late struggle stalwart, Dullah Omar, and the son of Dr Omar of Mabel Road was shot in an apparent attempted hijacking early Thursday evening. Sadly he passed away on the scene. The incident occurred on the corner of Jan Smuts Drive and Govan Mbeki Road.

Police spokesperson, captain FC van Wyk, says the victim was shot in the chest by unknown suspects. Shaheed Omar’s mother was also in the vehicle at the time of the incident. Van Wyk says the police are investigating a case of murder. A manhunt for an unknown number of suspects has since been launched.

The Omar family has declined to comment on the details surrounding the investigation.

The news of Omar’s alleged murder has been met with sadness, with Cape Town residents sharing their condolences with the respected family. While others speculated about the details of the incident, in light of recent developments around the family and the ANC.

The details of the Janaza proceedings:

The Janaza of Omar will commence by 15:30 on Friday, from 31 Mabel Road, Rylands Estate. It will proceed to the Mountview Masjid and the Pooke Road Maqbara.
