ID book valid until Smart ID’s are released countrywide

The Department of Home Affairs has warned of a fake message doing the rounds on social media claiming that the green barcoded ID book will not be valid after 31 March 2018.

The fake message says that residents need to apply for the Smart Card ID’s.

“Kindly note that the lifespan of a green barcoded ID comes to an end 31/03/2018. Please apply for your smart card ID. Lets share the information,” the fake message states.

The Department’s Thabo Mokgola confirmed that the green ID book will remain legal until the department is prepared to release the new Smart ID cards countrywide.

“To this end, we call on South Africans to apply for Smart ID cards at any of the 180 offices that are equipped with the Live Capture System. In addition, the Department has established a partnership with FNB, Standard Bank, Nedbank and ABSA to create an online portal where clients can lodge their application without visiting a Home Affairs office,” noted in a statement released by DHA on Tuesday.

South Africans can apply for a Smart ID at Home Affairs website:  https://ehome.dha.gov.za/echannel
