A 21 year old man is set to appear in the Mitchell’s plain magistrate’s court on Wednesday, following the murder of his 61 year old mother in Tafelsig on Sunday evening. The accused allegedly killed his mother and disposed of her remains in the refuse bin. The murder has sparked outrage in the community in which 61 year old Gafsa Roberts was a respected member.

Roberts’ eldest daughter who wished to remain anonymous said that contrary to what has been reported, her younger brother is not a drug addict but a psychiatric patient at Groote Schuur Hospital’s Psychiatry Unit.

“Her body was not chopped and her head was not cut off as it has been reported by the media or stated by the community,” she said.

She said the family is trying to deal with their loss as well as the fact that their own sibling took their mother’s life. She added that she does not know what could have triggered him to murder his own mother.

Investigations are still continuing and the cause of death is not confirmed at this stage, although it’s been reported that she murdered with a hammer. Mitchell’s Plain police said the the 21 year old will appear in the local magistrate court on Wednesday on a charge of murder. VOC (Imogen Vollenhoven)
