The Muslim Judicial Council Halal Trust (MJCHT) has certified some new dairy products manufactured by Clover South Africa. This comes after queries were raised on products without any halal logos. Sheikh Achmat Sedick, the director of the MJC Halaal Trust, says the body certified Clover South Africa in January this year.

The Clover products that are under the MJCHT’s halal certification amongst others are: Fresh Milk, ESL Fresh Cream, Sour Cream and Great Taste no Fat. All the suppliers and ingredients used in their products are halal compliant. However, some products do not have the halal logo but they have been certified.

“Recent products that Clover has produced have not been branded with the halal logo but it is halal,” Sedick stated.

The MJCHT also re-confirmed that the stabilizer used is fully halal compliant and is also endorsed by the halal body.

There has been major concern regarding the gelatine in Clover fresh creams. Sedick reassured that this has been certified and is halal. The MJCHT investigated the manufacturing process before halal certification was issued.

Inspectors visited the two manufacturing plants in Johannesburg and Cape Town to check the raw materials used in the production process.

“We would not give a certificate if it wasn’t verified that it is halal,” said Sedick. VOC
