The 15th edition of VOC’s Ramadan outreach project Ahlan Wa Sahlan is set to kick off on the first day of Ramadan on Sunday, with a broadcast at the Masjid us-Saabiereen in Macassar. The programme will see the station facilitate a Khatam al-Quran with the community followed a communal iftar. Through donations from community members, non-perishable food items are also distributed to impoverished residents.

Ahlan Was Sahlan coordinator Ebrahim Arnold took to VOC’s Breakfast Beat on Friday morning, to urge listeners to come out in their numbers on Sunday, for the collective recitation of the Khatam al-Quran.

“The month of Ramadan is the month of the Quran, and I think there is no better way to spend it but to assemble in the houses of Allah, reciting the holy Quran. When you do that, the tranquillity of Allah descends upon you,” he said.

He also urged those planning to attend, to gather non-perishable food items amongst family and friends, and donate it directly to the committees of the various masajid where the programme is set to be held. They in turn would distribute that aid to the more impoverished members in the community.

A unique feature of this year’s Ahlan Wa Sahlan programme, will see listeners given the opportunity to facilitate a khatam of their own at home. VOC has provided a recitation list on the website, which listeners can print out and tick off when they, a family member or friend completes a juz. Once the list is complete, listeners can send the completed list back to the station.

“I would certainly ask people to pull that off the website and start that Khatam process at home,” urged Arnold.

The Ahlan was Sahlan initiative is primarily held at mosques in the more underprivileged communities across the city.
