Another Khayelitsha woman murdered, dumped in communal toilet

A man suspected of murdering a Khayelitsha woman in her home and then dumping her body in a public toilet is expected to appear in court on Thursday, Western Cape police said.

Her body was found in the toilet in RR Block in the informal settlement at 08:00 on Monday, Captain Frederick van Wyk said on Wednesday.

She was believed to have been murdered in her home in Site C, Khayelitsha. Van Wyk did not provide the woman’s name.

A suspect, 27, was arrested on Tuesday afternoon. He would appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court on Thursday on a murder charge.

Van Wyk said such crimes were deplorable and police would take them seriously, especially as they took place during the 16 days of activism campaign.

Another young Khayelitsha woman was found murdered on Sunday. Noluvo Swelindawo, 22, was found shot dead on a footbridge near the Driftsands Nature Reserve. It was suspected that she was killed because she was lesbian.

On March 2 this year, 19-year-old Sinoxolo Mafevuka was found naked and strangled in a communal toilet in SST Block, Town Two, Khayelitsha. Her boyfriend’s two cousins were arrested for the crime. They are awaiting trial on charges of rape and murder.
