The ANC in the Western Cape on Wednesday called for a ‘proper investigation’ into the company which was behind the large “Zuma Must Fall” banner which was erected on the side of a Cape Town building last week.

The ruling party has accused officials of the DA-led City of Cape Town of dragging its feet in taking action against the company, Independent Outdoor Media.

“The ANC wants to get to the bottom of this riddle. It is now necessary to have a proper probe to find out precisely how this media company gets its business and who deals with it. The faceless people who are behind this campaign must come to the fore and it must be established how this company obtains its contracts and how it came to lease these spaces or got the rights to use it, since this company was also embroiled in actions about the legality of various billboards or spots,” said ANC Western Cape leader, Marius Fransman.

“It must also be determined whether any space on government or state supported enterprises buildings or property is leased to this company to put up advertisements or if any state aligned advertisements is booked with this company. If there is any connection to government or the state, it should be ended without delay.”

The anti-Zuma banner sparked outrage among ANC supporters after it was put up last week.

Some took to the apartment building on Saturday and ripped it off the wall using knives and other sharp objects.

Fransman said the DA has aligned itself with the “Zuma Must Fall” campaign which he deemed to have racist undertones to it.

Meanwhile, a new banner of the South African flag had since been erected in the place of where the anti-Zuma banner hung at the weekend.

It was unclear who was behind the erection of the latest banner. News24
