A statement endorsed by 34 pro-Palestine civil society organizations has been issued to express solidarity with pro-Palestine political prisoners currently engaging in hunger strikes in British prisons. Pro-Palestine activists allege that the hunger strikers entered an Elbit Systems factory shop and a Royal Air Force (RAF) base in an effort to halt the supply of fighter jet components to Israel and to challenge British involvement in the ongoing military operations in Gaza.
The hunger strikers face charges for actions allegedly conducted on behalf of Palestine Action prior to the organization being banned and designated as a “terrorist organisation.”
“We call on people of conscious in South Africa and across the world to demand that they are granted immediate bail and their fundamental right to fair, transparent and timely trials is upheld,” stated the civil society groups.
“The decision to undertake a hunger strike is a profound act of non-violent resistance. It is part of a long and solemn history of political prisoners using their bodies as a last resort to counter repression,” civil society groups.
