Fire and veld fires in George are being tackled with water-saving methods as strict water restrictions remain in place across the municipality and surrounding areas.
The George Municipality’s Fire and Disaster Management Services have begun using high-powered blowers to suppress flames by pushing heat away and separating fires from dry grass fuel.
The technique has proven effective on fast-moving grass fires, along fire edges and during smaller flare-ups, often stopping fires without using water.
The blowers are also being used in hard-to-reach areas and during mop-up operations, allowing fire crews to contain fires more quickly while conserving limited water supplies.
Municipal spokesperson Debra Sauer explained that the approach helps crews strike a balance between emergency response and responsible water use.
“Blowers are especially useful in hard-to-reach areas and during mop-up operations, helping crews contain fires quickly while conserving limited water supplies. This approach allows the municipality to protect lives, property and the environment while using water responsibly during a critical period,” said Sauer.
The municipality has urged residents to remain vigilant, particularly during hot and windy conditions, as the risk of grass and veld fires remains high.
