Search Continues After Mthatha Bus Swept Away in Eastern Cape Floods

Search and rescue teams in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, have recovered the school bus that was swept away by floodwaters in the Dikolini River. No bodies were found inside. The bus had been carrying 13 learners, two other passengers, and the driver. Three learners were rescued on Monday, while the search continues for the remaining passengers.

Authorities have confirmed that teams are also combing nearby flooded homes in case additional victims were trapped by the rising waters.

The death toll from the torrential rains and severe weather in the Eastern Cape has now risen to nine. Six bodies were discovered near Decoligny village, one in Tsolo, and two more in the Mthatha area on Tuesday evening.

Provincial government spokesperson Khuselwa Rantjie said authorities remain focused on locating the missing schoolchildren. “We are continuing with search operations following the school bus incident. Our teams are doing everything they can,” she said.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended his condolences to the affected families and communities. “President Ramaphosa offers his deep condolences to the bereaved families, affected communities and Eastern Cape residents at large,” said presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya.

Magwenya added that national, provincial, and municipal authorities — including the National Disaster Management Centre — are fully engaged in responding to the unfolding crisis. “These incidents, and others that may unfold during winter, highlight the need for South Africans to display caution, care and cooperation as the worst impacts of winter weather take effect across the country,” he said.

Ramaphosa also called on South Africans to unite during times of disaster: “The devastation that comes with nature’s forces demands that everyone works together to bring relief to families and communities who need it the most,” he said.
